When winter and its cold temperatures arrive, the last thing I want to do is go outside to exercise. Even if my workout is inside at the gym, I still don’t enjoy bundling up, cleaning the snow off of my car, and dealing with the messy roads just to get there. Ugh, sometimes it’s really tough to build up the motivation for all that!
Instead of skipping my workouts all together, I re-focus my attention on HOW I can enjoy exercise during the winter, which ultimately leads me to get excited about it. I find as long as I try new activities and mix things up, I stay motivated all winter long. That said, here are my favorite ways to keep cold-weather workouts exciting!
Try a high-intensity, CrossFit-inspired workout
Doing the same exact workout over and over again is boring, which is why I love high-intensity, CrossFit-style workouts so much. (Two of my favorite workouts are linked below.) These kinds of workouts vary greatly with regard to the movements, rep scheme, and duration, so keep my mind engaged and my body guessing what will come next. Plus, they're typically short and intense, so I don’t even have the chance to feel unmotivated. Once I start moving, I swear the workout is over before I know it!
Make friends with the treadmill
This might be hard to believe, but I rarely get bored on the treadmill. Really! Before I start running or walking, I always make sure that I have a "plan of attack" in the form of a treadmill workout to guide my sweat session. Either I create my own (one of my favorites is linked below) or find one on Pinterest. Interval workouts are my favorite because they challenge both my mind and body, which keeps things interesting and motivates me to finish what I started. I also love playing games on the treadmill, like rolling a dice to determine how many miles I will run or seeing how fast I can run a mile or 5k. Basically, I never do the same workout twice, so I look forward to my time on the treadmill.
Commit to a new class each week
Most fitness clubs and gyms offer a slew of group exercise classes that will keep your workouts new and fresh. My old gym offered all sorts of fun classes, such as Body Pump, kickboxing, Bosu Blast, step aerobics, Spinning, Zumba, and more. There was at least one class each week that caught my attention. To keep you motivated through the winter, commit to trying one new group exercise class each week. You might just find a few favorite! Mixing things up will make you excited about your workouts, challenge new muscle groups, and motivate you through the cold weather months.
Unleash your inner athlete
We all know sometimes dragging yourself to the gym can be, well, a drag, so how about joining an adult sports league? From soccer and volleyball to floor hockey and dodgeball, adult leagues quite literally make exercise a game. I have such fond memories of my high school soccer team, so joining an adult sports league would be a great way to move your body and stretch your social calendar at the same time!
Warm up your clothing
When all else fails, especially on really cold days, I toss my exercise clothing into the dryer before I get dressed to go outside. The warmth only lasts for a few minutes, but it makes the initial burst of cold a lot more bearable. Hey, whatever it takes to get me out the door and moving, right?
